چکیده

Tumors were induced in Regional Poultry Research Laboratory line 6 chickens inoculated in the wing web with Rous sarcoma virus the Bryan high-liter strain of pseudotype, at 1, 14, and 28 days of age. Tumor regression failed to occur in chicks inoculated at 1 and 14 days of age, but an incidence of regression of 50% was observed in chicks inocu lated at 28 days of age. Chick survival time postinoculation and the incidence of visceral métastaseswere directly re lated to chick age at inoculation. The age-dependent changes in the incidence of regression and métastases probably were associated with developing immunological maturity of the host.

Cellular immunity to Rous sarcoma in tumor-bearing chickens.

Chickens carrying primary sarcomas induced by SchmidtRuppin Rous virus were studied for possible cellular immunity against the tumor-specific transplantation antigens of those tumors by use of the colony inhibition test. The thymus cells of 7 out of 8 tested chickens were found to reduce signifi cantly the colony formation of Rous sarcoma cells while they had no similar effect on other types of...

Cellular immunity against Rous sarcomas of chickens. Preferential reactivity against autochthonous target cells as determined by lymphocyte adherence and cytotoxicity tests in vitro.

Spleen cells from random-bred chickens bearing Rous sarcomas were commonly more reactive against the neoplastic target cells in autochthonous than in allogenic interactions in vitro. This difference was observed both in cytotoxic assays ((51)Cr release from labeled target cells) and in an immunoadherence test measuring attachment of (51)Cr-labeled splenocytes to Rous sarcoma cells. Specific spl...

Sarcomas in Hamsters after Injection with Rous Chicken Tumor Material

Newborn hamsters were injected subcutaneously with a suspension of finely minced Rous chicken sarcoma (Schmidt-Ruppin strain). After an interval of about 2 weeks, progressively growing sarcomas developed at the site of injection in almost all animals. Also in adult hamsters inoculated intramuscularly with the same material sarcomas developed at the site of injection within 2 to 4 months. Second...

Transmission to adult pigeons of several variants of the Rous sarcoma of chickens.

Previous studies have shown that both cell suspensions and filtrates of the Rous sarcoma grown in adult chickens were entirely inactive when injected into even newborn pigeons (2). On the other hand, it was also shown that the Rous virus can be adapted to ducks and other species as well, provided the recipient host be a young or a newborn individual (1, 2) and the donor host be endowed with a c...

Reciprocal effects of natural immune bodies from chickens and ducks on variants of a sarcoma virus.

Like so many other infectious agents, the viruses of chicken sarcomas are far from being static, immutable entities. If coming from tumors grown in chickens of a certain age (6) and injected into newborn or young birds of alien species (4, 5), infection and subsequent adaptation may follow. This process involves a mutation or variation of the causative virus and, as is the case with so many oth...
